Salty, sweet, and sour, mebos is a love-it-or-hate-it snack. An apricot-based sweet made from pulped dried apricots and flavored with sugar and salt is called mebos. Apricots must be ripe and of the finest quality. Once flavored, apricot pulp is formed into circles or sticks. Mebos is one of the oldest confections made in the Cape: traditionally, this method was used to preserve apricots for longer, but since then it has become a South African favorite. The combination of sweet, salt, and sour may surprise those who have never tried it, but the more you try it, the more you will love it. Mebos is also perfect for boosting your energy during those afternoon slumps because of its high sugar content.
